  18.                        ARMY TELLS WHAT DISCS ARE NOT

  21.         WASHINGTON, July 8 (UP)-Official Washington was sure today that it
  22. knew what the flying saucers were not-but it hadn't the faintest idea what
  23. they were.

  26.         The Army Air Forces said they had the matter under investigation.
  27. Preliminary study has disclosed that the flying discs are not:
  28.         1.Secret bacteriological weapons designed by some foreign power.
  29.         2.New-type Army rockets.
  30.         3.Space ships.

  32.         Privately, some air Forces officers say the saucers are not-and let
  33. it go at that. But officially, the A.A.F. said it is "keeping an open mind"
  34. because the discs have been reported by so many normally responsible
  35. persons.

  37.         "No such phenomena can be explained by any experiments being
  38. cunducted by the A.A.F.," the official report said. "The statements of
  39. witnesses are being correlated in an effort to identify the reported
  40. objects."

  42.         Rear. Adm. Paul F. Lee, director of the naval research laboratory,
  43. said tersely: "We concur in the Army announcement."

  45.         A guided missiles expert attached to the naval research laboratory
  46. said he had seen one of the "saucers." Dr. C. J. Zohn said he and two
  47. fellow scientists spotted it June 29, at White Sands, N.M. When he reported
  48. the finding to the Army, he said, he got nothing but knowing smiles.

  50.         "We noticed a glare in the sky," he said. "We looked up and saw a
  51. silvery disc whirling along. We watched the thing for nearly 60 seconds and
  52. then it simply disappeared. It didn't go behind a mountain range. At one
  53. time it was clearly visible, and then it just wasn't there.

  68.         PITTSBURGH, Pa., July 8 (AP)-Many persons have seen the mysterious
  69.  "flying saucers," but Connie Dunbar knows the source of the ones he saw.

  71.         Dunbar, who said he was struck by saucers thrown by his wife, Mrs
  72. Bessie Dunbar, was granted a divorce yesterday by Judge Harry H. Roward.
